THE CRAWLER'S COMPANIONpatch notes for the apocalypse

Larracos

First seen: Book 3, Chapter 9

Named but not visited: the capital city of floor 4's disputed lands, reached by a guarded staircase down from the Desperado Club's station-131 casino, opposite the one leading to the Hunting Grounds. Per the crocodilian guard Igor, it's the prize the floor's warring factions actually fight over, though their armies stay barred from real conquest until crawlers reach the ninth floor; until then commanders train their units and everyone else parties, with the gambling down there run on credits instead of gold.

Appearance

Layout:

Per Crawler Priestly's own cookbook account: built into an inverted, funnel-shaped cone descending in layers, smaller across than some Hunting Grounds cities but deeper, with districts for theaters, museums, colleges, temples, and stores. The city itself, at the ninth floor's center, embodies a fable about a volcano and a centipede at its base, whose meaning even Priestly can't fully work out. The inverted castle where the Semeru dwarves once ruled sits at the very bottom of the wellB4C33

  • PHYSICAL Layout: Per Crawler Priestly's own cookbook account: built into an inverted, funnel-shaped cone descending in layers, smaller across than some Hunting Grounds cities but deeper, with districts for theaters, museums, colleges, temples, and stores. • TAG Pleasure Districts: Per Priestly, home to the Desperado Club and the brothels, where the aliens hire mercenaries from an already-drained market and trade weapons with the same murderers who cleaved through Priestly's own group on his own crawl's sixth floor
  • TAG Fate: Per Priestly, both crawlers and the resident aliens get expelled together once fewer than 30 hours remain; once only three armies remain overall, the aliens can re-enter and the city, NPCs and buildings alike, is destroyed for good in the fighting that follows
Chapter 34
  • TAG Flooded: Katia funnels the real Gate of the Feral Gods, timed charges, a chum bomb, sharks, and pain amplifier jellies directly into the faction market; more than half the city ends up submerged over twenty minutes, killing its shopkeepers and mercenaries and permanently cutting off the Desperado Club's own entrance
