THE CRAWLER'S COMPANIONpatch notes for the apocalypse

Mysterious Letter

First seen: Book 2, Chapter 17

A used Suppurating Eye scroll, a common lich spell that lets its caster see and hear anything happening near a spilled bodily fluid, working like a planted camera. The blood soaking it is the caster's own, deliberately spilled onto a document he expected to be picked up by whoever investigated GumGum's death, which is how he overheard Carl in the safe room. Only works out of the holder's inventory. Carl and Donut use it as bait, leaving it out in the open near the magistrate's building while staging a decoy plan out loud.

Appearance

A folded, blood-stained piece of paper covered in squiggles and triangles neither Carl nor Donut can readB2C17

Connections

Carl:

Sets it on the roof tiles as bait, staging a loud fake conversation with Donut about looting plans, then crumples it and feeds it to a decoy clockwork Mongo that leaps for the magistrate's roof; its fate once the clockwork copy's minute-long duration runs out isn't shownB2C21

Takes it off GumGum's corpse and stares at the symbols that night, trying to memorize themB2C17

Mordecai:

Works out what it actually is, a used Suppurating Eye scroll that lets its caster see and hear near the spilled blood, which explains how he overheard Carl in the safe room; warns it only works outside the holder's own inventoryB2C21

Recognizes the script as necroscript, something an undead magic user would write, though he can't read it himself; says it takes its own language skill and floats a lich as the likely authorB2C17
